Article title: six deaths from pellagra
date publised: september 1, 1909
There were six deaths reported around Durham N.C. The cause of pellagra still left doctors puzzled, however they did continue to search for a germ that they believed caused the disease. Experiments were done to locate the origin of pellagra and included examining the blood of a patient of pellagra. It was reported that there was an organism in the blood sample that was in question and sent to Richmond and Johns Hopkins University for further inspection.
It was also reported that Dr. McCampel of the State Hospital wrote a paper about pellagra after treating 12 patients with the disease. Out of the 12 patients 3/4 of them were women, which was noted as odd since it was believed that the disease mainly affected men.
There was a report of a women's death due to pellagra. She was a boarding house keeper and it is noted that none of the boarders developed pellagra even though they would have been in contact with her.
