date published: july 23, 1915
This article describes some of the experiments done by Joseph Goldberger who was in charge of Pellagra research for the public health service. He conducted experiments at the Georgia and Mississippi state sanitariums. It was reported that he confirmed the theory that pellagra was due to eating too much starchy foods, as well as determining that it was not contagious. His explanation on why it was so common in the South and not in the North was also reported. He explained that starchy food are more common in Southerners diets and that people in the North ate more fresh meat.
