article title: find pellagra cure in change of diet
date published: september 8, 1916
It was reported that further research done by the public health service at orphanages had concluded that pellagra was not caused by one specific food item but an unbalance diet. It was stated that pellagra had been one of the puzzling diseases ever studied by medical investigators. It remained in Europe for 200 centuries before being reported in the United States for about 60 years, where in the last 10 years became a serious problem due to the number of people with the disease.
It was reported that due to a misunderstanding in an article published production of highly milled flour had dropped almost 25%. The flour industry was hurt in a financial way because the misleading article lead people to believe the cause was due to the flour. However it was corrected that pellagra could be "prevented by an appropriate diet without any alteration in the environment, hygienic or sanitary."
