date published: january 2, 1908
In 1908 an article was written that described a new disease, pellagra, that entered the Southern parts of the United States. Before this time pellagra was found in provinces in the North of Italy. According to Dr. Dana it was reported that the pellagra came from fermented corn that is diseased. It was also reported that most of the cases of pellagra in Italy was in poor and rural communities. At this time it's appearance was in the Southern states and the Department of Agriculture sent a commission to Italy to study causes and ways of preventing it. It was described as a form of insanity.
