Pellagra was described as an awful disease that has resulted in suicided due to the pain and madness it causes the diseased. Many cases of Pellagra were around Northern Italy at this time in poor and rural population. It is reported that according to medical opinions the disease is caused from a diet consisting mostly of maize, however there are some areas where people do not live on maize where pellagra has been found. It is also reported that the poor consume rotted corn that has been stored in mass production.

It was reported that pellagra received attention from the Italian government and municipal authorities in leading cities where the disease was common. It was noted the disease had not been known for centuries before. Symptoms of the disease were described as itchy and red hands and feet and patients had suicidal tendencies due to the disease that's reported to end in madness.
