article Title: pellagra caused by infected water
date published: may 31 1913
Another theory was reported on the cause of pellagra being infected water. Professor Scala and Alessandrini of the Institute of hygiene of Rome claimed to have discovered water containing flint stones. It was stated that the cure was to avoid the infected water or to get rid of the infection in the water with carbonated chalk. With this discovery it was noted that the peasants in Italian no longer have to live in fear of eating corn and authorities would proceed to examine the waters of the infected districts. This article claimed that the disease was about to be gotten rid of with this discovery.
It was also reported that there were 50000 cases of pellagra annually in Italy, therefore private funds had been given out for the care of the diseased outside of the government.
