article title: the cause of pellagra
Date published: june 19, 1910
It was reported in this article that Dr. Louis Sambon also had a theory that was different from maize being the cause of pellagra. He conducted research in Italy for the English Pellagra Investigation Committee. It was reported that he scientifically established a parasite that transmitted the disease by bites from a gnat. If true pellagra would have been caused by a parasite which is similar to a number of diseases at the time such as African "sleeping sickness", bubonic plague and yellow fever. I was observed that the symptoms were like those of a parasitic disease since in many cases the symptoms got worse in seasons.
It was reported that many people who grew corn hoped that this was the cause instead of a germ in corn. There was a reported drop in corn consumption because of the panic of the disease associated with it.
